An Arizona teacher was reportedly “dating” a student for weeks before she was arrested on suspicion of having sex with the 13-year-old boy in a classroom, authorities said.
Six weeks prior to the arrest, Las Brisas Academy students informed the principal that they believed sixth-grade teacher Brittany Zamora was romantically involved with a classmate, AZ Central reported.
In student interviews, Principal Tim Dickey took notes in early February that suggested the district was aware of the 27-year-old teacher’s alleged misconduct.
“I’ve heard other kids in my class say that they think they are dating,” said a student, according to Dickey’s notes.
Another student told the principal of rumors the relationship continued off school property.
“Everyone talks about them having an inappropriate relationship outside of class and at recess,” the student reportedly said.
School officials said they didn’t find any evidence that Zamora was sexually involved with a student.
“We did investigate,” superintendent Richard Rundhaug told the news outlet. “We determined there were some elements of favoritism, and we gave the teacher some very specific direction on not allowing that favoritism to continue, and then we monitored to make sure those directions were followed.”
Zamora was charged in late March after a student’s parent found explicit text messages from the teacher. She faces charges for sexual molestation of a child, furnishing harmful material and sexual conduct with a minor.
Authorities said the pair allegedly had sex three times between Feb. 1 and March 8 in encounters on and off school grounds. In one incident, Zamora reportedly performed oral sex on the 13-year-old boy in a classroom.
The student’s family reportedly has considered taking legal action against the school district.
“I want the school to be held accountable for what they’ve done and change rules and make it to where this can never happen to parents, another parent’s child,” the victim’s father told the site.
