A registered sex offender suspected of kidnapping his stepdaughter fatally shot himself as officers in Colorado cornered him, police said.
Jody Haskin, 47, of Grand Junction, shot himself early Friday after being located by cops during a manhunt in Rifle following the disappearance of his 12-year-old stepdaughter, Raeanna Rosencrans, in Grand Junction on Wednesday, police said.
“At 6:47 this morning, officers were searching for a wanted subject believed to be in the area,” the Rifle Police Department confirmed on Facebook. “During this time, they encountered an armed adult male. Officers ordered the male to drop his weapon. The male refused, and ultimately shot himself.”
Late Thursday, police found the girl unharmed at a Walmart in Rifle, where she appeared to be in good condition but was taken to a hospital for observation. Haskin, who was charged with suspicion of second-degree kidnapping in her disappearance, was not with her, police said.
An investigation into Haskin’s death will now be conducted by Rifle police with the assistance of FBI officials, as well as the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and the Grand Junction Police Department.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued an Amber Alert Wednesday after Raeanna’s disappearance. Police in Grand Junction said she was last seen getting into a “boxy” car with a balding white man in his late 40s to early 50s who called her by name.
Raeanna — who is developmentally disabled but high-functioning — entered Haskin’s car willingly. He’s a registered sex offender who had a warrant out for his arrest for sex assault on a child in Grand Junction, police said.
