With a power-sharing government seemingly going nowhere, Zimbabwe’s president, Robert Mugabe, has announced that fresh elections could be held early next year, whether or not a new constitution is ready. At the age of 86, he says he is ready to stand yet again. Well, fantastic. In fact, let us now congratulate Mr. Mugabe, as next month he will celebrate 30 years of uninterrupted power.
Amidst a visit from South Africa’s Jacob Zuma (which may showcase some of the foreign policy differences in his administration from staunch Zanu-supporter Mbeki), the International Red Cross has just warned that Zimbabwe could also be facing a very severe food crisis.
The charity says that more than 2.7 million people, a quarter of the country’s population, are in “dire need” of food aid.
There are already more than two million people who need food aid in the country and that number is going to rise because the harvest has failed, the group says.
